ABOUT THE SONG:
This song is about getting through the depression, the mundane and the sense of being small. It is looked at from the approach of an outsider trying to influence the person who is in a rut. The tone is meant to be sympathetic but convincing. It's short, sweet and kind of fun to listen to in headphones. Past Bookends started out as a song that was just synth pad chords played on my M-Audio Keystation. Later on, acoustic guitars were added and the main melody line came about. As always, I feel, with my writing, the lyrics changed again and again up until the point that they were recorded. In a bit of an unorthodox maneuver, the percussion elements were recorded last! I had initially planned the song to be a straight synth and acoustic guitar opening to the album, but as I worked more on it, I felt that the song needed a little bit of percussion. Still, I always liked this as the opening tune for the album, possibly because it's make up contrasts the majority of the album, except maybe the second to last song (All Those Yesterdays).

ARTISTS WHO PROVIDED INSPIRATION FOR THIS SONG:
The song has a bit of a Teenage Fanclub vibe to it. Maybe if you took Freiheit's 1988 song, "Keeping The Dream Alive", and sprinkled in little New Age elements to it. One person mentioned that it reminded him of Fountains of Wayne, but I haven't listened to enough of their stuff to agree or disagree.

The holidays have come and gone.
And left you feeling more alone.
You’ll need someone to lean upon.
Don’t search too long…
You have a face that shows the years
We can’t erase those lines, but still,
No need to dredge up all those tears
To make what’s old brand new, again.
The pain will come and go.
And pass you on to more.
But it’s harder than you know, to hide in the cold dark spaces.
And there’s so much more than this.
Imagine what you’ll miss
So let’s keep the past bookends on the shelf and live life again.
When everything has come unglued
You second guess each thing you do.
You need to know I’ll see you through
I’m always your bag for punching.
And every day brings back the sun
You’ve never lost what’s yet to come
Your brightest moment’s just begun
And outside, the world is waiting.
The pain will come and go.
And pass you on to more.
But it’s harder than you know, to hide in the cold dark spaces.
And there’s so much more than this.
Imagine what you’ll miss
So let’s keep the past bookends on the shelf and live life again.
